Sung to the tune of “At the End of the Day” from Les Miserables
[THE PARENTS]
At the end of the day there is nothing but trouble
Because all our kids will just not go to bed
It’s a struggle, it’s a war
And there’s nothing that anyone’s doing
One more night standing around, what is it for?
One more minute of stalling.
At the end of the day there is nothing but trouble
Because brushing their teeth is just so hard to do.
Then they’re off, “go to your room”,
They leave their clothes on the ground,
And half dressed it is now time for fam'ly prayer.
One more minute of whining.
At the end of the day there is nothing but trouble
And each one of them has a turn out of his bed
One more drink, one more song
Will they go to bed before dawn?
All they want is to get down out of their beds –
One more minute of freedom.
At the end of the day there are all the kids sleeping
And they all look so sweet while they’re so fast asleep
And tomorrow, maybe I can
Do it again, that is the plan
And we’re lucky to have all these children that we can love
And we’re counting our blessings.

Okay, everyone -- here's the backstory. Joel has been singing "At the End of the Day" a lot lately. We didn't know until tonight that he was singing the wrong lyrics -- "At the end of the day there is nothing but trouble" -- but he often would just break out into song and more often than not that's what would pop out. One day he said it just as we were starting to put the kids to bed, and it really alleviated some of the tension we'd begun feeling -- at least, on the parents' part. I told him we really needed to come up with lyrics for the whole song -- there are so many lines that are appropriate for bedtime with young children. In the end, we only used a couple (but doesn't "It's a struggle, it's a war" just WORK?), and this is what we've got so far. Enjoy!
LOL! Nicely done, and oh-so true...
Oh Joel, dearest Joel. Your bedtime was 8:30 in the vain hope that you would actually settle down by 9:00. Ah well, from generation to generation . . .
Gotta love the creativity! And doesn't humor help SO many tense situations? And as you've heard way too many times, it goes so fast and soon they are out with the car and you're waiting for them to come home and then they move out and you still worry . . . sorry, I got a bit carried away! Life has a tendency to do that--just carry us away!
Remember when we changed the lyrics to the school song during gym? You're just too creative!!
...and before you know, it begins to snow...
Oh, I was hoping it was inspired from our viewing of "Les Miseranimals" on Monday! Hee hee, good job writing such a fitting song!
Funny how I can't remember resisting going to bed. As Parents we will never forget!
