Naughty words

Parker has been saying naughty words lately. No, no -- nothing like that. But... well, you'll see what I mean in these next two stories. We were invited to a pre-Conference breakfast yesterday. It's something our neighbors do every Conference -- and we LOVE it! They have THE BEST food there -- egg casseroles, and cinnamon rolls, and bagels, and ham & cheese rolls, and fresh fruit, and juice -- and it's all homemade! SOOOO yummy! In fact, Parker prayed THREE TIMES about it, he was so excited! After the kids are done eating, they generally go straight out back, where they have a fenced yard that has a swing set and a trampoline and a basketball court. It's super fun for the kids, and then the adults get to chat a little longer before we round up kids to go home and watch Conference. Well, just minutes before we had to leave -- and minutes before General Conference started -- one of the neighbor girls came in to tell me that Parker was singing a naughty song and it was making all the kids uncomfortable. I went out to see what was going on, and there were Parker and Stewart on the tramp, and it looked like everything was going okay. I called them down and told them we had to go, and then I asked Parker how things were going. "Good," he said. "Eden said you were singing a naughty song. Can you tell me what she was talking about?" I asked. "O-o-oh," he said, with a knowing look. "Yeah, I was singing 'Gangnam Style'. You know, 'sexy lady'." I had to not laugh. First of all, as far as bad words go, that one's not SO bad, although not very nice for a 10-year-old to say. But the fact of the matter is, I've never EVER heard Parker sing that part -- even though he sings it TWELVE THOUSAND times a day (yep, he's totally obsessed and can't get it out of his head) -- but that just proves he knows it's not appropriate -- so I'd forgotten it was even a part of that song. Plus, the fact that Eden, a girl, was uncomfortable -- that's just precious! I told him he needs to not sing that part of the song, and we left it at that. I laughed later. ********************************************************* A few weeks ago, the kids had Spelling Bees in their classes to determine who would go to the School Spelling Bee. If you are one of the top two in your class, you get to go -- and Stewart totally made it! Parker did really well last year, so he got to do the School SB, but this year he didn't make it. It wasn't really that big a deal to me, so I said, "Oh well, buddy, that's okay." But, apparently it wasn't. P: Mama, they thought I said "p" instead of "t". That's just dumb! Me: What do you mean, bud? P: I was spelling "custom" and they thought I said "p". Me: Oh, I'm so sorry, buddy. That's so sad. P: I'm so mad I want to say a naughty word! Me: I understand you're super mad, bud, and I'm really proud of you not saying a naughty word even though you want to. P: It makes me want to say the F word! (He does actually know what the F word is -- we had a very interesting discussion about it at the dinner table one night in First Grade when he asked what it was in front the whole family!) Me: Well, good job not saying it, buddy. P: It just makes me so f-wording mad! (Yes, he actually said "f-wording"!) I couldn't let that one slide, but I couldn't get after him too much, either, because I was too busy trying not to laugh! Oh, this kid -- he's still pushing boundaries all the time, but I've learned to try and go with the flow a little more and it's been a lot better for both of us. He just makes me laugh all the time, with his Psy impersonations and his Pokemon mania and his crazy-for-Lord of the Rings. I have to say, I like 10 pretty good -- it helps he's such a fun -- and funny -- kid!

10 is such a fun age! Parker is so much fun to talk to and hearing his "Favorite Things" was great. He's certainly becoming a grown-up guy. Good job helping him deal with anger, mama!

I don't know how many songs I sang along with as a kid, not knowing how vulgar they were. A guy in our bishopric with we first moved to Provo told me that he was driving away from a visit to the temple, turned on the car radio, and found himself singing along with "Welcome to Miller Time." Yep, you gotta watch yourself.

He's getting so grown-up *sob*
I'm glad he held his tongue at the spelling bee, I would have let the judges have it!
