In that time, I've accomplished a lot. I started on Saturday, when I put on a camp quilt for Paige I was going to do last year. I got the fabric for the top last year, so this year I only had to get a canvas piece for the bottom. I like to use canvas for the bottom because it's really durable, holds its shape so well, and lays flat on the floor -- great for putting down for a little extra padding when we're having a sleepover! I finished tying it on Sunday, took it off the frame, and felt very proud of myself for doing it so quickly.
And that just whetted my appetite. On Monday I decided to do something crazy -- literally! I had these four pieces of fabric I'd sewn into a camp quilt for Paige, but I wasn't really loving the way they turned out. It was like a really, really big four-patch that I was going to applique a big orange flower onto, and not really all that interesting. So, I took it apart on Monday, then on Tuesday I made these crazy four-patches AND sewed them all together into a rectangle... only to discover I didn't have nearly enough quilt top to cover the back (which is this really fun fleece -- we're camping in the mountains, and it's COLD!). I really liked the way it turned out, and I didn't want to take everything apart, so I decided to go back to the fabric shop and see if I could find something that would go with what I'd already done. The kids went with me, and after only a little time (30 minutes or so -- trust me, that's a LITTLE time at a quilt shop with three little helpers!!) I found what turned out to be the perfect choice! I made a 6" border around the whole thing, and then had to trim off 1 1/2" so it would fit the backing -- oops! Yesterday I sewed on the binding, and finished up while I watched the kids play in the pool with a neighbor and talked to Becky on the phone -- thanks, Ofelia and Becky!
So, now I have this loud camp quilt, too -- could it be any brighter?
Please note the liberal use of orange -- how familiotic!

Love those quilts. People just don't make them anymore. When I was growing up and we were dirt poor, I slept under my mother's home-made quilts. Nothing feels or smells like them.
On the funny side, I was awakened by my brother Bruce (with whom I slept) mumbling over and over "This crummy old quilt. This crummy old quilt." He talked in his sleep a lot.
Again, it's even more beautiful in person! Great colors!
Grandpa S, hehe! It's interesting because I never knew the difference between a quilt or blanket. The only "covering" I knew that had a different name was a comforter.
So Natalie kept getting offended when we first got married and I'd call the quilts we had "blankets", or even sometimes "comforters".
"It's not a blanket! It's a quilt!" she'd repeat. I think I finally got it down right :)
Natalie that is so awesome! I love it! I wish I had your creativity in sewing - you want to sew one for me? I keep saying that I'm going to do the same thing with our old jeans. But I am a procrastinator. Plus, I don't have near the quilting skills you or our moms do. So cute!
Hey, hey! Love that quilt! Love the orange, love how easy it could be (if you had all the squares cut out beforehand, of course :), love how it's just plain fun, love everything!
Love ya!
