Catching Up

Wow -- summer started early for us, and the craziness just didn't end!  I keep waiting for life to calm down a little, and I think it's too late -- we're definitely in a busy time of life right now.  I guess I need to be better about scheduling some calm into my day -- I'm working on that, but if you have any advice I'd love to hear it!  For now, I've decided to do errands only on two days.  We're not getting to the library every week because of it, but I think it's starting to help.  My dishes were done every meal last week, and I'm getting used to the counter being clean!

So, a quick recap.  June found us in baseball season with Stewart -- and it will be his last.  I found out that Joel doesn't really like baseball (ssshhh - don't tell Nick!), and Stewart got beaned by the ball FIVE TIMES.  That was enough for him, and for me.  I guess maybe we'll have to try some non-team sports, since he didn't really like soccer or basketball.  I was thinking of reliving my glory days on the tennis team... he really is like me in a lot of ways, so maybe he'll love it as much as I do!

Joel and Kevin ran their first marathon -- and they did so great! They were within 4 seconds of their goal, and ended the race smiling!

July was, of course, the Anderson Reunion, and we had a lot of fun.  We stayed this year at Grandma Katie's cabin, and I don't know if Joel will ever want to go back to the trailer.  I have to admit, I really loved being able to do laundry and give the kids baths every night.  They were so clean when they woke up in the morning!  One of my favorite parts of the Reunion was going down to Rexburg to see the BYU-I campus and the Rexburg Temple.  Things have changed so much -- but my old apartment looked mostly the same!  And we had lunch at the Pizza Pie Café, which the kids
loved.  Sadly, Craigo's is gone -- there's an insurance company in the building now -- but the sign is still there, and the memory of Pizza Bombs and Mozzarella Bread Sticks will live on in memory.

August meant the start of soccer for Paige, and football for Parker.  Those sports both went into September, and Parker even had a playoff game or two in October.  Paige was markedly improved over last year, but I didn't really like her coach at all.  Parker was really improved too, but he needs to practice a lot more with Dad or he's going to feel really outclassed next year.

Our favorite late-summer discovery was the Splash Pad they just made at the city center.  It was so much fun!  The kids loved it every time we went, and Kate still (in November) talks about it!  I loved watching them interact with each other -- they played so cute together!  And even though it was hard to leave, they were all pretty good about it after about an hour.  I guess they must have been tired.

At the end of August, Parker, Stewart, and Paige went back to school -- in fifth, fourth, and second grades.  I can't believe my sweet kids are getting so old!  They've been really great this year, and we even had a couple of perfect report cards so far!  Kimball is in his second year of preschool, and loving it.  Mrs. Kristie (pronounced "Miz Kristie", because she's from Texas) had to cancel preschool one week due to a funeral, and it was all Kimball could do to wait for the next week!

Halloween was a lot of fun.  About two weeks before Halloween, we went to IKEA (it was Fall Break) with all the kids, and the boys found some reflective vests they REALLY wanted.  I told them they could only have them if they used them for Halloween costumes, and just like that Smith Bros. Construction became a reality.  I don't know how many of my kids will go into construction when they grow up, but it sure was fun to see their "business" in action!  We found some helmets at the $1 store, and I printed out labels to go on top that had Smith Bros. Construction on top, and all in all it was under $5 per costume -- not too shabby!  Paige saw a set of fairy wings and a crown at the $1 store, and just like that, she and Kate became Fairy Princesses for only $2 apiece.  Score one for the Mom!  All the kids were REALLY darling, and I love that they all (mostly) came up with their costumes this year.

I'm sure I forgot something... probably something important... but I figure a little is better than nothing!  Hopefully I can be a little more consistent in November.  Is there such a thing as year-end-resolutions?  Well, I'm making one, anyway!

Sounds like fun times all around. But no more pizza bombs? Makes you stop and think.
